I worked at a nursing home for two years. I had training working in the rehabilitation unit as well as the Dementia and Alzheimer's unit. I have used gait belts and worked alongside a physical therapist to help make me more knowledgeable and confident about specific transfers such as, bed to wheelchair and wheelchair to bathroom. I had experience with catheter care as well as ostomy bag care. A typical day at work for me included, getting people in and out of bed, bathing, changing and feeding meals both solid and puréed foods. My most important part of the day was being a friendly, happy face for the seniors who needed it most. I understand how difficult it is for an adult who is now a senior to now receive care from a young adult and not have the independence they once did. Knowing this, I have learned patience and am able to put myself into someone else's shoes to give them the best care possible.
