I am a Christian woman and I have found that my passion and gift from God is working with seniors. I have been a volunteer for nearly 10 years now visiting seniors in assisted living facilities either by myself or ideally with my therapy dog Max! My stepmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in her early 60s. My father was 14 years older than her so it was very difficult for him. They ended up living in separate areas of the same facility. I loved spending time with both of my parents as their disease progressed, and as a result, I learned a lot along the way. Because of this, I started visiting seniors in various Assisted Living facilities with my dog. I also volunteered doing Meals on Wheels as well. I currently volunteer as a Hospice companion and I have found that this is also my passion. I love to spend time with seniors and really get to know them and their families. I think that patience, compassion, and humility are characteristics that I express to my patients. Using my dog Max can also be a big help because there are so many people who are dog lovers and miss their own animals. I think that love is what is absolutely necessary to do this work.
