Hello! I currently care for two children. One is 6 years old the other is 9. The 9-year-old has been diagnosed with autism. I have been caring for them both part time for just under a year. Both are a joy to work with, while each presents their own challenges. I have also been responsible for a family of 4, all under the age of 12. In addition I have experience in caregiving for two adults who both had extensive mental development blocks. In my care of all, I have found it to be essential that I have open communication with the parents about their parenting methods. I try to use whatever methods they are currently using in order to build trust with the child or adult. Once that trust is established, it is far easier for the child or adult to communicate their wants and needs as well as for them to accept the authority I have as caretaker. Through all of my experience as a caretaker, regardless of special needs or not, patience, kindness, firmness and trust have been key.
