I would like to express my utmost appreciation and send a tremendous “thank you” to Karen. While my brother will likely be transferring to the Seattle area, in order to be near his sister and TBI specialists, I want to let you know how happy and pleased I was with the changes that Karen implemented. In particular, steps that Karen took to improve my brother’s quality of life, as well as steps to ensure that my brother started (regularly) seeing medical and mental health professionals. There are several changes that Karen made, but below are a few examples of changes that really make a difference: Recognizing the need, and then implementing a chart to track doctors appointments: Prior to Karen’s arrival, I had not communicated with Karen’s predecessor, and I received very little information, in terms doctors or specialists that my brother was seeing (or saw). However, this all changed after Karen’s arrival. Karen had my brother’s caregiver put up a chart in his room to keep track of appointments. More importantly, to ensure that my brother started seeing specialists that he should be seeing. In addition, she also provided updates, as to whether my brother was, or was not able to make a given appointment. Recognizing the need, and then organizing the acquisition of a new bed: For a person that is disabled and spends a lot of time in a bed, a nice comfortable bed makes a huge difference. I am happy that Karen assessed his sleeping arrangements and made a determination to make his sleeping environment more comfortable and enjoyable. Recognizing the need for my brother to have a caregiver with a positive outlook on life: This may seem like a little thing, but it can have such a profound impact on a person who is disabled and stays in their room every day. I often put myself in my brother’s shoes and wonder how he feels. What is remarkable is, that Karen also did this, which was demonstrated when she recognized that my brother could benefit from being around a person with positive energy. Karen’s arrival was a very pleasant surprise and wonderful turn-around. She was indeed a breath of fresh air. As a family member of a person that is disabled and living far away, there is nothing more important than knowing that your loved one is being well cared for. I am happy that Concerned Citizens has a person like Karen who empathizes with clients and makes their needs a priority. I continuously worry about my brother, but I felt so much better and really comfortable after Karen took over.
