I previously worked at an elementary school as a special needs associate. My job included but not limited to being a 1-1 with a girl for two years. The child was non-verbal and was wheelchair bound. She had Cerebral Palsy, CMV, Epilepsy, cochlear implants, and a g-tube. This required me to be on alert at all times monitoring for seizures, helping her learn basic skills such as understanding books, making choices, walking using a gait trainer. I also had to transfer her to a changing table, administer feedings and medications through feeding tube, check cochlear implants multiple times a day, try to teach sign language, as well constantly learn and adjust to new equipment and technology that was introduced to her. I also have worked with children with Autism. I love working with special needs children because as much as I strive to help and teach them, they teach me so much more. About life, whats important, and how to have unceasing joy.
