At my school, Saline High, there is a program called Connecting. This program provides students with many opportunities to work with other students with Special Needs. My sophomore year, I worked in the Early Childhood Special Education classroom where I helped kids ages three to five with developmental delays. At the beginning of my junior year, I worked in a classroom with people 26 and older with mental disabilities. I worked with them on reading, writing, current issues, and how to carry a conversation. At the end of my junior year, I worked one on one with a boy in third grade with Downs Syndrome. I absolutely fell in love with working in a setting where it was just me and the student and I was able to really get to know him. I worked with him all throughout my senior year as well along with another student in Kindergarten with Downs Syndrome. In addition, I was President of the Connecting Club where we hung out with peers with special needs that attended my school.
