While I was a student in Utah, I worked at a private group home for 3 men in their forties with disabilities ranging from autism to traumatic brain injuries. I didn't provide medical attention, but I provided meals, help with daily living, transportation, and one on one attention. I personally have been in a position in which I was dependent because of physical limitations, and it was incredibly difficult. However, having people who cared about me deeply and showed me personal attention brings hope and light in what can be a dark situation, which is what I would hope to do as a caregiver.
