My mother developed Alzheimer's disease in her early 60s. I spent a great deal of time with her because I wanted to and because there were simply no other good and lasting options at the time. Trusting another individual with the care of a loved one is very difficult. While all of the in-home workers we chose were good at doing the tasks associated with the job, we appreciated the workers who went beyond the physical requirements of the position and developed an emotional bond with my mother. After spending years caring for my mother, I volunteered to work as a companion to the elderly in an assisted living facility. In this capacity, I had the opportunity to work with an Alzheimer's patient, and I found this rewarding. I believe good health depends on physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental well-being; and all of these aspects of health are connected. People need people who invest in them on all of these levels.
