Hello and thank you for reviewing my profile. My grandmother was 87 when she passed away and had spent the last 3 years of her life living in my home with me. She had developed congestive heart failure and copd, so was not able to safely live alone any longer. Over the 3 year period she bagan to decline and instead of her trying to take care of me, I began taking care of her; cooking her meals, making sure she ate and drank, helping her bathe, sorting her medication, etc. In the middle of the night, I would wake to find her awake and moving around the house. This was the most difficult time, not knowing if she would sleep through the entire night. In addition to her care, my mother was going through some serious health issues and lived with me for 6 months before going into a residential care facility. She had been diagnosed with heart blockage and a stent was inserted. An abdominal aneurysm was discovered and she had a stent placed to control that issue. While in a rehabilitation facility, she fell and broke a hip. After surgery to repair her hip, instead of sending her back to a rehab facility, I brought her home with me. I did not think she would get the quality of care that I could provide in another facility. During her recovery, I administered meds, checked blood pressure, changed adult diapers, prepared meals and provided physical therapy on a daily basis. She eventually went back home but my dad was not able to care for her and she was admitted into a residential care facility and remains there. She has developed dementia and has some good days, some bad. The dementia has caused her to be incontinent and occasionally she's not sure where she is. It was an honor to care for both of them while helping them maintain their dignity.
