Caring for my husband in his final illness gave me an appreciation not only for older folks facing health challenges, but also those who care for them. Over the past year I provided companionship to a gentleman who was battling a cancer that took his life too early. I took him to/from his medical and other appointments, and frequently on errands. I assured he took his meds, ate regularly, and got exercise. Most important, I listened to his concerns or let him enjoy peace and quiet. Currently I assist two mature women, each for a few hours a week. One woman seeks some level of independence so I take her to church and errands. The other woman has mobility issues so I help with meal preparation, tidying her living area, and companionship. I am very comfortable with pets. I would hope to offer similar assistance through care. com to seniors needing those services to supplement the care of medical providers and therapists.

Eileen was a wonderful help during my husband’s 11-month illness. I was able to continue working while Eileen helped with day-to-day activities, generally in 4-5 hour shifts. She often drove my husband to his doctors’ appointments (where I would meet him for the appointment). She helped to prep meals, and run errands with him. She always had his best interests at heart. We have stayed in contact following his death. And I hired her a second time to help with my elderly father.
