Enter a zip code to get matched with caregivers that meet your needs
All my life since High School, I have worked for special needs families, either as a caregiver, a camp leader, a peer tutor, a Big Sister, a classroom aide, teacher, tutor, or diagnostician. I find that the unique pattern of strengths and needs that these children possess help reflect how the world treats them, and when we treat with love and kindness, they respond likewise. I have always striven to listen to their complaints, motivations, needs, and goals while trying to decipher where their strengths and needs are to best learn how to work with them. Once establishing a thorough understanding of just who they are inside, it is a lot easier to develop a meaningful relationship so our work together can accomplish the goals we set out to accomplish together. Just to listen, patiently and reflectively, has helped me considerably when working with all my students, not just those in special education.

Donna was a trusted tutor for A. She worked with A. daily as A. struggled through a difficult curriculum at a private school. When she started with A. in fourth grade, A. was reading at the first grade level. She could read grade level textbooks two years later using the Wilson program and literature from school and books that Donna picked out. Although she struggled through the private school math program, Donna taught her important concepts that she didn't understand in class, like long division, how to perform operations with fractions, positive and negative integers, pre-algebra , etc. She helped reduce A.'s anxiety about school by making learning fun, so a lot of laughter came from their table!
