I'm in college for education in hopes of being a teacher! I have been pet sitting for a few different families for the last few years. Both dogs and cats. Usually, it is while they are on trips, whether for a few days or a month. I have never had a problem (unless you count one of the cats hiding in their spot up on the beams in one of the rooms).
