I readily acknowledge that I am a novice in professional pet care -- until Dec. 4, 2023, I worked in the information business for over 40 years -- but have been around dogs my entire life and cats for more than a decade. I believe it is imperative that the pet owner -- and, no less importantly, the pet -- like and trust me in order to have the relationship work for the benefit of all concerned. (I realize that some dogs and cats can be skittish around strangers -- and, consequently, wary of them -- but I spent the past four decades dealing with high-strung professional hockey players, so I'm confident I can find common ground with any dog or cat. Hockey players, unlike dogs and cars, don't seem to care for being scratched behind the ears or having their belly rubbed.)
