For approximately a year and a half, I worked at a residential home established by the St. Joseph's Center in Scranton, PA. At the home, five male residents were given 24/7 care from a staff or agency nurse and a direct support professional or aide (position I held). While one resident was minimally verbal and could eat food by mouth, the other four men were nonverbal and ate via a G-tube site, and all were wheelchair-bound. I cannot express how much I loved coming into work every day to take care of and spend time with all of the residents. I was trained to help with their nutritional and hygiene needs, but just the slightest eye contact or laugh from any of our residents would make my entire shift beyond enjoyable. Selfishly, I gained so much happiness from this position, but I also hope that my positive and upbeat spirit aided in their everyday lives.
