In the last 3 years I've been caring for children with autism. I've found it very challenging at times but very rewarding at the end. Understanding that children with autism have a unique way of communicating through a specific type of behavior is really they way to understand them. Its amazing to watch their personalities come alive through specific sensory and preferred activities. The first time I really understood that what I was doing was improving someone's way of life was when I noticed more eye contact, facial expressions were appropriate to the situation and the love you can see in their eyes when they realize that someone is proud of them. Also, when I was able to teach the simplest task and they picked up on it right away. Every little thing that we take for granted are the hardest things that children with autism have to be taught to accomplish.
