My professional experiences working with individuals with developmental and intellectual "alternative abilities" ranges from one-on-one assistance in public schools, to day programs. I love being a part of ensuring safety & comfort for others to be able to explore their world safely & happily. Actively acknowledging the specific needs of individuals, listening not only with ears, but also being aware of social cues and body language is crucial to providing the best care & assistance. I have also worked in special education, and find working with children and young adults to be extremely rewarding & fun. Personally, I think our culture and public school systems have gotten a little better at accepting people as they are. But I do think we still have a ways to go. It is a wonderful experience to discover ones special and unique personality, and to be able to see someone else discover it is truly a treasure and gift.
