As a Direct Support Professional, I assisted clients in facilitating growth to achieve their highest level of independence in various areas such as personal care, self-advocacy, household management, peer support, and employment & financial management. I also served as a liaison between clients and other support professionals such as physicians, counselors, and family members. Prior to that I provided care for clients with complex medical and physical needs that also had severe developmental disabilities. I preserved the client's dignity and minimized discomfort while carrying out duties such as diapering, bathing, and dressing them. Under the supervision of a nurse, I performed respiratory care utilizing Chest Physical Therapy, Cough Assist Machines, Oral Suctioning machines, as well as performing water flushes and connecting/disconnecting feed through g-tube. Being a Direct Support Professional has been the most rewarding and fills me with joy knowing that I am helping.
