About Ashley

I just graduated from Northwestern University in June and have a strong knowledge base in many areas of study. When teaching, I encourage students to ask both direct and open-ended questions, and to find answers themselves and ask me for hints and explanations, rather than doing their work for them. I value good interpersonal skills, life lessons, and experience in addition to being "book smart". I try to address each of my students' individual needs and cater to various learning styles, whether visual, auditory, kinesthetic, or logical/mathematical. I think it is important as a teacher to gain a strong level of trust and respect from students, and I believe it is important to convey that learning is a life-long process that is never finished, and that I am still learning just as much as they are. In high school, I was a Peer Tutor, and I have also worked as a Teaching Assistant in elementary school classrooms through a center for talent development at Northwestern University. Additionally, I have a lot of teaching experience in the arts as the Dance Captain of a theater, a flute teacher for private lessons, dance instructor (ages 7-years-old to 17-years-old, many styles), choreographer for kids musicals, and counselor at arts camps. I would be comfortable teaching/tutoring in the following subjects: dance, art, basic tumbling, baton-twirling, music theory, basic piano, beginning/intermediate flute, spelling, history/social studies, math (anything that comes before Calculus), English, reading, and basic French.
