As a former first grade teacher, I had many students with Individual education plans who required adjustments/ modifications to the regular educational setting. As an elementary principal, my school was fully inclusive and attended by students with a variety of needs. I have always been a proponent for special needs students, ensuring that their needs were met, in an inclusive setting whenever possible. I feel that the goal for these students should be to design an educational program that will help the student be involved in, and progress in, the general curriculum. I have given workshops on differentiating instruction, demonstrating how lessons can be adjusted to meet the needs of all students. Because I have been a classroom teacher and administrator, I am very much aware of the challenges presented to teachers on a daily basis. Because of this insight, I realize how imperative it is to provide respect and cooperation and adhere to the suggestions and guidance of the teacher.
