What made me know I wanted to be a nurse was when I previously worked at a nursing home for patients with Alzheimer's Disease believe it or not. It sounds horrible, & at some times it was, but at other times it was quite fun. See, my favorite thing to do was to sit with my small house of people & talk about the old days. Alzheimer's has this weird effect sometimes where the patient will forget any new information but all of the old information would be as sharp as a tack. Plus it was my favorite thing to sit around getting to know a little bit about the people I was caring for on a daily basis. I had such deep respect for these people too, not just because they were people who could no longer take care of themselves, but because they were slowly becoming my best friends. A promise I can make to you before even meeting your family member is that they become my own family & so do you. For some it's a weird concept, but after spending so much time together it shouldn't be.
