A few years ago I cared for elderly women with dementia. I was in charge of helping make meals, take meds, & perform typical daily activities. This helped me become more tolerant of different circumstances & increase my level of patience. I traveled to Costa Rica in January 2016 to work at a local orphanage that housed children from infancy to 12 years old, all of whom came from troubled households. The volunteers were responsible for disciplining the children & creating educational activities. This past fall I interned at an assisted living home where I planned & executed daily social & intellectual activities. I also provided 1-on-1 assistance to residents needing help with chores and other tasks. For the past few months I was a caregiver for an amazing 5-year-old girl with leukemia. I gave her the proper meds & kept her as engaged as possible to keep her spirits high. She has unfortunately passed away, but she touched my heart & taught me to stay positive & to be compassionate.
