My experience with special needs began with my cousin who has cerebral palsy and is on the autism spectrum. Our family is very close and I grew up spending time with him and later caring for him when his parents were away. I also was an assistant in high school for the Adapted PE class where I helped students to access the curriculum. This was a lot of fun for me as I really loved working with these students. I was a Young Life leader for Capernaum which is a youth group for students with Special Needs. I helped with games/activities and went along to summer camp as a buddy. My role was to spend time with my buddy, make sure they could join the activities and manage medications. I feel very comfortable around those with special needs.
