I have worked with children-elders for years and have built amazing bonds with the ones that I have cared for. I worked in a nursing home/assisted living in special care where our residents had dementia, Alzheimer's, non-verbal, wheelchair bound, hospice, hard of hearing, difficulty of vision, etc. The key to being a good caretaker is going with the flow. Most patients with dementia like to tell stories over and over again even if the details change. They go back in their childhood from the beginning. Another way of looking at things, while taking care of someone else's loved one is you start to think of them as your own family! Whether they remember you or think you are someone new everyday that love for them grows. Even if its an irritable day for them you make the best of it to ease their pain. You always want your patient to feel as comfortable as possible so they can have a sense of security around you. The more you care the more they admire your presence. That is why I care.
