Hands-on Care Needed For My Mother In South Burlington

About who needs care: Grace lives in South Burlington. She started palliative care two weeks ago. She has dysphasia, confusion, memory trouble, poor eyesight and poor hearing. Much of her condition is a result of being left in soiled diapers and alone for hours. This has resulted in chronic UTI's that have left her in the state she is in. According to reports, she is much weaker that when I visited her at the end of August. Grace has a mechanic cat she loves. She also loves looking out her french windows at the plants, birds and squirrels. She has a digital photo frame with family photos. She has enjoyed listening to books on tape. She very much enjoys talking with me on the phone. She likes having her scalp lightly massaged. She has told me she would like someone there to do "little things" she feels need doing; to listen to what she wants and do as she asks. She can be reticent about asking for what she wants and saying when she is uncomfortable/in distress; does not "want to be a bother." Grace is a nice, fun and interesting person who has done amazing things. She is a favorite among the staff, because she is uncomplaining and nice. Her uncomplaining reticence is such that she has not been willing/able to advocate for her own care. Mom is most active between breakfast and lunch, then takes an afternoon nap. My brother, who has control of her finances and her Medicare, has, yet to arrange a private caregiver, but will probably have them there in the morning and possible the afternoon. My aim is to have a caregiver there to cover the last part of Mom's day. The specific tasks I want the caregiver to provide are: * to make sure my mother is not left in soiled diapers for more than 15 minutes (preferably changed as soon as soiled); * to make sure she stays well hydrated with a variety of liquids (I will cover outside items like popsicles, flavored water, etc. as requested); * to answer the phone for her when I call and to help her manage the phone when we talk; * to make sure she has been bathed as schedule on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and follow up to get her bathed if she has missed a scheduled bath; *to report to me about the care she is receiving and her condition; *to provide her with appropriate mental, emotional and physical stimulation, including talking with her, giving her a sense of choice and control, encouraging appropriate movement (chair yoga/tai chi, PT exercises, etc.), facilitating her listening to books on tape, talking about photos, etc. About the care needs: Grace needs someone who is gentle, patient and kind with her, and who advocates firmly and effectively for her. Grace enjoys bright, lively, fun people, yet who can focus on her and take the time to understand what she wants; to help her express her desires rather than leap to conclusions and actions. The caregiver needs to help Grace feel she knows what is going on; what is being done. Caregiver skills preferable include memory and cognitive care, personal care (hair brushing, teeth cleaning, bodily cleanliness, bathroom assistance, etc.). Grace has traveled extensively in the US and abroad. She enjoys people who are from difference countries and cultures. Hobbies/interests preferably include travel, foreign foods, dogs, reading (classic murder mysteries, science fiction, fantasy). Services needed include: companionship, feeding, and bathing / dressing.
