About who needs care: My dad is 86 years old and lives alone in his home. He has started to be a lot less mobile and showing some degrading memory in the last couple of months. He can move around on his own with the use of a walker and canes, but he recently started having some more issues and is overcoming a back pain/injury. In the last couple of weeks he developed significant swelling in his legs. He has home health visiting two to three times a week: A RN comes once a week and PT twice a week. He recently started losing a lot of interest in life and is spending more and more time sitting in front of the TV. He lost a significant amount of weight over a short period and we've made a good effort to keep him eating well, but he often needs reminders or for somebody to make food for him to want to bother eating at all. He doesn't go down the stairs where his washer and dryer are anymore and needs help with things like laundry, meal prep, and light housekeeping. My sister has been helping with that, but I'm interested in finding some more consistent help for my dad. I live about 45 minutes away and am only able to visit about once or twice a week. My sister lives a little bit closer and visits two to three times a week. My dad doesn't feel like he needs help, but when I explain how a home caregiver might be able to assist he has admitted that might be a good idea. About the care needs: My dad likes friendly people who can speak clearly. :) Unfortunately. he has refused to wear his hearing aides for a while so someone who doesn't mind working with a stubborn hard of hearing man would be good! I hesitate to even say it, but I have noticed he is more cooperative with female caregivers in general. I am looking for someone who knows how to cook simple tasty meals and do light cleaning and laundry. Also, if they can engage him in conversation maybe about his interests or past work. He was an Airforce pilot in the 1960s and then flew commercial airliners from the 1970s-1990s. He likes Louis L'amore books and westerns. He adores and misses his wife. She suffered from alzheimer's and passed away in 2022. He was her main caregiver. Since her passing he has struggled feeling a loss of purpose. He will always claim he doesn't need any help, but we are feeling he is ready for assisted living, but he is very opposed to that right now. I'm hoping an in-home caregiver can help with chores and with some additional personal interaction. Services needed include: transportation, meal preparation, errands / shopping, and light housekeeping.
