About who needs care: My husband David has a neurological condition called SCA2 (spinocerebellar ataxia type 2). His condition affects his walking, speech and fine motor skills. He has balance problems and risks falling if not holding on to something. He can walk short distances with the walker around the house but requires an electric scooter for longer distances. He has difficulty being understood, especially when talking on the phone. This is often a source of frustration and irritation for him. David has trouble swallowing and sometimes coughs and starts choking. He requires his food be cut into pieces, but is able to eat a normal diet. David likes structure and consistency. He is particular about how and when to do things. He will have a list of things for the caregiver to do during the day. He wants to eat lunch at 12:00 and dinner at 5:00. The caregiver will need to prepare meals. He will make a grocery list and order the items for delivery. The caregiver will help put away the groceries, prep and cook the meals that he specifies. He likes to go on the computer to shop, play games and manage the household financing, maintenance and repairs. David is friendly and sociable and enjoys visiting. His energy is good and he rarely naps during the day. He is still able to drive and will take his car with the caregiver to run errands. About the care needs: The caregiver needs to have a positive attitude towards working consistently throughout the day on active and physical tasks They need to be attentive to helping David avoid falls and patient when he gets frustrated. They need to be accepting of his ways of doing things. Services needed include: meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, feeding, bathing / dressing, and mobility assistance.
