About who needs care: My sister lives in assisted living facility that provides housekeeping, laundry, bathing, grooming, toileting, meal preparation, transfers, and medicine assistance. She is in a wheelchair. She has dementia and lacks the hand coordination to use silverware. This job description includes assisting with eating meals, reminding and assisting with sipping drinks to stay hydrated, and companionship. She sometimes watches TV and takes naps in her recliner but also enjoys sitting in the courtyard, going to music performances at the facility, and having her fingernails painted. She has very limited ability to talk but can hear and understand. The assisted living facility serves meals at 11:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. . My sister will eat meals in her apartment. Her husband also lives there but is not included in these job responsibilities. He is physically and cognitively independent and mostly keeps to himself in his bedroom. About the care needs: Patience is important because everything is a challenge for her. She eats slowly and reacts to things slowly. She sometimes needs encouragement (but not forcing) to eat and drink. Although she enjoys music, she needs encouragement to go to music activities. It helps to be a caregiver who can recognize what she needs and initiate activities. She has difficulty asking on her own. Services needed include: companionship, feeding, and bathing / dressing.
