About the job

About who needs care: My father has Alzheimer's dementia and is in the moderate stage overall with good personal mobility, but requires full time attention

About who needs care: My father has Alzheimer's dementia and is in the moderate stage overall with good personal mobility, but requires full time attention and direction for tasks like clothing and bathing himself. My mother is in good health overall to care for him, but has back pain that is worse on some days and she could use some intermittent help/respite with certain tasks and sometimes to just be able to leave the house or go to church without having to worry about leaving him. She also has poor short term memory and could use help keeping up with a number of things (medication refills for them both for example) to lighten her load day to day. Ideally someone who could be in home initially for 1-2 days a week for a couple hours perhaps to help with bathing and some tasks at minimum, or simply to sit with my father for a bit of a respite for my mother would be great. Having someone my mother could call as an option for some unplanned help is probably the biggest need however. While he has never shown signs of aggression, there have been 1-2 brief episodes of delirium/sundowning which lead to my mother needing more urgent help (him not making it to the bathroom, mishandling his adult brief, suddenly needing a show and sheets change) which overwhelmed her a bit between the emotional distress and the sudden burst of chores to handle. Willing to pay at a higher rate for those unscheduled visits to check in and assist as needed. About the care needs: Someone patient and willing to be flexible in the tasks and hours required as time goes on. Ideally someone who plans to continue assistive care for the next few years as the familiarity built with my father will be helpful as his cognitive health further declines. We plan to use an in-home caregiver to fill the gaps until they need the transition to assisted living/memory care ultimately. Currently, my mother can manage, but it is stressful for her. Someone experienced in care of patients with dementia would be ideal and who understands that ultimately patience, redirection, and reorientation are the best ways to handle sundowning/delirium events as I expect these will become common at some point in the future.
