About who needs care: My mom has both schizophrenia and stage 4 breast cancer with weeks to live. She has hospice CNAs who visit daily but she has overnight and/or early morning needs not being provided by the agency. She still likes to get out of bed but cannot do so independently and is otherwise bed/homebound. She is a cigarette smoker, which is the reason I am struggling to find live-in or extended home based care for her. She needs medication reminders, bed transfers, and occasional adult diapers changes or trips to the commode but the daily CNAs are doing a great job so the responsibility is shared between all of us and I am able to be there every 2-3 hours during the day. Just need a little bit of respite in the morning or once overnight as I'm an only child and sleep is a necessity. About the care needs: My mom's schizophrenia means she can be pretty stubborn sometimes, or ask for things that seem very strange. Since she smokes cigarettes indoors, someone who is bothered by the smell would be a poor fit. It can be hard to be a little more forceful with someone you know is dying of cancer, so being a strong person is a must. Anyone with experience with Alzheimer's or dementia would most likely be a good fit, as there are some similarities. Services needed include: feeding, bathing / dressing, and mobility assistance.
