About who needs care: My father-in-law Gary has dementia. We are working with his doctors to get more of a work-up done. Meanwhile, he lives alone. Two daughters live 1hr and 2hrs away and visit every 1-2 weeks to help with shopping and set up his pill minder. His son and myself (daughter-in-law) live out of state. Gary is able-bodied and does not need help with personal cares. He would benefit from regular companionship, setting structure to his day, reminders to complete tasks (e. g. take his meds, take out his contacts), and IADLs (e. g. housekeeping, shopping, meal prep, laundry). Gary is a very active person who does not sit still much. He does have baseline anxiety and photographs confuse him (i. e. he thinks the person in the picture is there). No other behaviors. Gary loves to do yoga and other physical activity. He also enjoys puzzles and watching sports. About the care needs: Ideally, we are looking for someone who has experience caring for someone with dementia and has patience. Gary has trouble with word-finding and needs reassurance frequently. He is 68 years old and very physically capable, so a caregiver who does not mind physical activities (e. g. walking) would be nice. Since Gary enjoys sports, a caregiver who can engage on that topic would also be preferred. Services needed include: transportation, meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, and companionship.
