About who needs care: Do they have any underlying conditions? My mother is living with cancer and recently experienced a viral infection that has taken her hearing and mobility. What are their hobbies/interests? She used to love playing games on her iPad, participating in Bible study, and doing puzzles. Now, we are navigating a new way of engaging with these interests. She may still enjoy visual and tactile activities, such as reading, following along with scripture, or working on simple puzzles. How would they structure their ideal day? Her ideal day would be structured with consistency and calmness, ensuring she feels safe and secure. Since she cannot hear, communication will need to be adapted through visual cues, written words, and gentle physical guidance. She may benefit from activities that engage her sense of touch and sight, such as flipping through picture books, watching familiar scenes on a tablet, or engaging in sensory-friendly activities like sorting or organizing small objects. Providing companionship and reassurance through presence and gentle interaction will be key. About the care needs: What type of personality would be a good fit? Someone who is warm, kind, and patient. They should treat my mother as they would their own family, providing her with love, respect, and dignity. Since this is a new world for our family, I need someone who is understanding, supportive, and willing to communicate with me regularly to ensure my mother is settled and comfortable. Are there any specialized skills they need? They should have experience working with individuals who have mobility challenges and hearing loss. Knowledge of non-verbal communication techniques, such as writing notes or using visual cues, would be beneficial. Experience in assisting individuals undergoing cancer treatment or working in palliative care would also be helpful. Above all, they need to be compassionate and adaptable. Should they have any specific hobbies/interests? While there are no required hobbies, someone who enjoys quiet, thoughtful activities such as reading, puzzles, or light arts and crafts may be a great fit. If they are familiar with faith-based materials, that could also be beneficial since my mother previously loved Bible study. Most importantly, they should be attentive to what brings her comfort and be willing to help her engage in activities that provide peace and joy. Services needed include: transportation, meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, companionship, feeding, and bathing / dressing.
