About who needs care: I'm having major knee surgery and live alone, and my surgeon says I will need assistance the first week after the surgery. I'm very healthy and active. So I would like someone to come late morning every day, just to help me with getting into the shower and getting dressed, and on one day I will need to go to my physical therapy appointment which is a couple of miles away. I would need my helper to ride in the taxi with me to my PT, and ride back with me, because I'll need help getting in and out of a car. About the care needs: The helper would need to be fit/strong/healthy, as they will be helping me physically after this knee surgery. Good communication skills are essential so they need to be a good listener and actually hear what I actually need, not what they think I need. There will be a great deal of pain the first week, so I need someone who will be very careful with me. For example, not hitting my foot/leg on a door frame as we are moving about. I will have a rolling seated scooter (non-motorized) that will hold my left leg straight out, locked in a fully extended (straight) position for the first two weeks, and I cannot bear ANY weight on it or it will ruin the surgical repair. So they need to be someone who can understand this and be very careful as they help me. I can take a few hops on crutches as needed, as long as the left foot never touches the floor. But mainly I will be seated in a scooter. Services needed include: transportation, feeding, and bathing / dressing.
