My mother is 84 and has dementia. As her dementia progresses, she is defaulting to her native Spanish language. We need someone to coach her about simple life skills. We have tried an English speaking occupational therapist, but my mom had trouble understanding her. Her siblings suggested something less formal and in Spanish. So I envision, regular visits, establishing a relationship, and then weaving in the life skills. Apparently, her ability to comprehend instructions is significantly better in her native language. Although my mother lives in a beautiful retirement facility that offer these types of services, they do not have anyone on staff that speaks Spanish. *** Note, I checked "bathing and dressing," but not exactly hands on: my mother can bathe and dress herself, she just has trouble putting outfits together.
