About who needs care: My mother is healthy and cognitively great for almost 96, but very anxious. She is mobile with a walker, but doesn't seek out physical activity, and mostly moves between her bedroom, the living room and the bathroom. She reads, watches TV and talks to her family on the phone, but would benefit from a companion who she could share stories with, talk about books and TV she reads/watches, Google interesting things she likes to remember, etc. She does go out to appointments, but is otherwise mostly at home. She has a live-in caregiver, but her caregiver needs to have time to go out and do her exercise, errands, etc. so I'm looking for someone to give her a few hours off a few days a week. I live nearby, but work myself and can't come over every day. This person would mostly provide companionship, make lunch or tea for my mom, and, if my mom is willing, go for a walk, do some chair yoga, etc. Really to give her caregiver a break, and provide some distractions to help with my mom's mental health. About the care needs: My mom is smart, well-read, and has an amazing memory for someone her age. Someone who likes to talk about books and movies, their family, the news, history, etc., would be lovely. No specialized skills needed, but someone who is calm, confident, kind and a good listener would be a good match. Her caregiver does the intimate stuff my mom needs (which isn't much, really) and I am the problem-solver type, so she really could use someone who is happy to visit and listen without always trying to make things better would be a great addition to the team! Of course, someone who knows what to do in an emergency and could help with a personal need if that arises during those few hours she is there. Right now, she dresses herself, attends to her bathroom needs, works her computer and TV, etc., but someone who is calm and skilled should something unexpected happen. Services needed include: transportation, and companionship.
