About who needs care: My father has dementia * It is difficult for him to get around. * He will walk with his walker when he is strong enough but is mostly in a wheelchair. He enjoys doing puzzles and playing games (Trouble and Yahtzee); we use flash cards for his speech and he enjoys water colors. Typical day: * He should be woken up at 9 am; cleaned and changed; teeth brushed; * Breakfast and morning pills (medicine is prepped by his daughter) once he is ready. * Exercise right after breakfast: stationary elliptical machine and then standing and walking exercise. * After exercise he usually needs a short nap - no more than an hour so he sleeps at night. * He enjoys watching TV while he is up if not playing games or doing puzzles. *Lunch is around 1 p.m. * Afternoon depends on his strength and awareness as to what he will need to do *Dinner is at 6 p.m. so before leaving the care giver should change him into his gown and have him in his wheelchair for dinner. The ask (hope) while dad is sleeping the caregiver is able to do some light cleaning (vacuum the 1st floor, keep the kitchen tidy after breakfast and lunch prep; clean his bathroom only). About the care needs: They should be up beat as dad is very quiet with this disease. You really need to be able to draw him out at times. They should be physically able to give him a shower at least twice a week. We have a roll in/walk up shower and he is able to walk in at this time. We have a manual hydraulic lift to assist standing when needed. So far we have not needed to use it but they should know how to when we get to that stage. The biggest thing is patience for him as he is slow at walking, eating, talking (yes and no questions), and a willingness to watch the same movies over and over again or playing Trouble and losing as he cheats. LOL Services needed include: meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, companionship, feeding, bathing / dressing, and mobility assistance.
