About who needs care: 74-year-old retired railroad conductor. Our mom passed away 4 years ago. He makes most things into a joke, sleeps a lot of the day, has been pretty depressed. Cares a lot about his dog but we're considering returning the dog to the shelter unless someone could help care for him. He weights about 160 pounds and needs help moving around. Spends most of his time sleeping or watching tv. Simple eater. Not good at caring for himself, cleaning, or any real household tasks. My brother and I (44 and 42) are the only close family and we live in Los Angeles and Seattle respectively but can come home occasionally and would help manage the back end of things.
About the care needs: My dad can be a bit grumpy, so someone who can handle that and push back is best - his current home health aid knows him well and deals with him just fine. He doesn't know what's best for him, so sometimes you have to strongly encourage him to do things like eat, or change his clothes/clean himself up. He's into music a lot, and baseball/ football and boxing. He's typically done better with women, but we would need someone pretty strong to help him move around. He also has some issues with dementia ramping up, but his mobility is pretty limited so as long as he's in his chair, or in bed, there shouldn't be too much to worry about.
Services needed include: transportation, meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, companionship, feeding, bathing / dressing, and mobility assistance.
