About who needs care: The patient is in advanced stages of ALS (Lou Gehrig's) disease. Experience with this disease is critical. She has a feeding tube for nutrition, and uses a bi-pap and cough assist to help with breathing She is almost non-verbal but communicates with an eye gaze computer. She is a Hoyer lift patient and has a power chair. She needs help with personal care, assistance with daily needs and communicating with the staff in the nursing home where she resides. About the care needs: She should have a good sense of humor and be able to take a joke. This is a terminal disease, so patience, compassion, and empathy are important. The ability to anticipate a need is important because communication is difficult for the patient. Services needed include: transportation, meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, companionship, feeding, bathing / dressing, and mobility assistance.
