About who needs care: My Mom passed away Nov 2023, after 67 years of marriage. Me and my 3 other siblings have been taking turns staying with Dad in their home. We are traveling from RI, FL and CA to make this happen. At this point in time, it's getting to be unstainable for us to continue. But we promised Mom that we would do everything in our power to ensure he can stay in the home that he knows. He has dementia - he knows his family, but can't manage finances and such. He is often dizzy but walks without a walker. He uses the restroom by himself and showers by himself as well. He spends most of the day in his office watching his stock channel. He also likes to clean and look through coins. He gets the mail down at the mailbox everyday. He loves to putter in the backyard. Picking weeds and picking up leaves. His routine is very structured and is extremely important to maintain. It's not a typical routine, but it's been his life for over 5 years. He gets up between 6:00 and 7:00. He gets his own coffee, water, ensure and a twinkie every morning. He then goes to his office and turns on the TV. At 9:15 we make his meal. It is the same thing every day. Either a slice of turkey or ham, mashed potatoes with gravy and butter and a second cup of coffee. He then gets dropped off at the Buckhorn Bar and Grill around 11:00 ish and gets picked up at 1:00. He visits with his friends there and loves getting out of the house for a bit. At 2:00, he either has a half sandwich or 2 scoops of ice cream and a twinkie. He will then go to bed for the remainder of the day. He has back pain and laying in bed helps with pain relief. At 6:00 he has 2 more scoops of ice cream and a twinkie. I know this sounds bad, but at 89 with dementia, we have honored his requests. About the care needs: It's most important thing for dad, is to be able to do things for himself. He gets frustrated when we try to do it for him. So, someone will need to learn what he can and can't do without being pushy. I'm sure he is going to be frustrated at having anyone other than family with him. It will be an adjustment for sure. Services needed include: transportation, meal preparation, errands / shopping, and light housekeeping.
