About who needs care: Our Father currently is living alone and has agreed it would be very helpful for him to have a caregiver 3-4 days per week to help him with the following: 1) Grocery shopping both together and just the caregiver alone doing so 2) Setting up meds once a week and making sure he gets on course with taking them daily 3) keeping him company in conversation and holding space to listen when he wants to share - he likes to engage and is quite pleasant 4) Helping with any laundry needs 5) Taking him on errands when he wants to get out of the home About the care needs: I think a female would be optimal as a care giver given they tend to be patient (not to be sexist on my part, although I am his daughter), and gentle. The type of personality of a care giver I believe would be a good fit would be a woman who is willing to engage in conversation, upbeat and positive, has experience and an understanding of dementia, and is not bossy but rather willing to give him the space to ask for what his needs are. Our Father does not have any hobbies. His routine is to get up in the am, spend about 2 -3 hours reading the paper and watching news, eating a few meals (of which we would like him to have healthier ones). When he is alone, he gets bored and lonely and therefore he is poised to have help/caregiver. He is quite liberal politically, 100 percent non-racist (Thank God!), kind, pleasant, non-argumentative, and enjoys good humor. Services needed include: transportation, meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, and companionship.
