About who needs care: Early onset vascular dementia. Still completely communicative, aware of surroundings, know people, etc. but short term memory has been on a steady decline. About the care needs: Social, able to listen to/converse with mother patiently. She is a historian with deep specific knowledge of the New Deal and New Mexico history. Also over 30 years in state government as head of Handicap Children department and assistant to the Secretary of State - so lots to talk about. Is just now retiring from a non-profit she started and ran for 25 years preserving New Deal artworks and buildings. Patience and gentleness is main skill needed as mother is now repeating herself a lot. Services needed include: transportation, meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, companionship, feeding, and bathing / dressing.
