About who needs care: My dad is a widower age 89. He lives in an independent living area of Asbury Methodist Village. Medically, he is having some memory issues and has a chronic lung condition bronchiectasis. He generally is independent but these conditions are leading him to be somewhat deregulated with sleep and meal times, and his diet is problematic if he doesn't have some meal support. Interest-wise, he follows the news closely (he's a former journalist), enjoys reading about history, and follows football and other sports. For his day, we would like the aide to help him get up at 10 a.m. if he isn't already up, have breakfast, bathe and dress. Then he would need assistance with a nebulizer treatment for his lung condition. After that, the aide could help with cleaning and laundry or other household tasks until early afternoon when he would need a light lunch prepared and organize a dinner to be left in the fridge for microwaving later. My sister and I check in regularly and see him most days in the evenings. About the care needs: He would do best with someone who is easygoing and quiet, not too bossy. The person should be flexible and help him retain his dignity such as when helping with dressing. The aide should be able to support him in some ways that are contrary to what he says, such as he might say he's not hungry but if they bring him a light lunch he would go ahead and eat it. He takes a small amount of medicine and may need to be reminded to do so. It would be nice if someone could sit for a little while and enjoy football or other sports with him. Regarding skills, we would like the aide to be able to provide the nebulizer treatment, which is not difficult after a brief orientation as I (a non medical person) was able to learn it easily. Services needed include: meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, feeding, and bathing / dressing.
