About who needs care: My in laws M87, F84 live at home and are, until recently, quite well and independent. My FIL is hospitalized for a heart valve infection, and significantly weakened and diminished from his previous independent and vigorous baseline. He actively managed household and yard maintenance including chopping wood and plowing snow until about five weeks ago. He will be discharged this week and under the care of visiting nurses for 6-8 weeks of IV antibiotics. My MIL is in good health, but is not strong enough to direct or administer the support he will need and has "forgetfulness" that may be early stages of dementia or memory loss. Repeats questions. doesn't have good short term recall. FIL is intact cognitively but has some hearing loss. His adult children and their spouses have been on site throughout the illness, but live two hours away, so will need to supplement their active support with in home support. My in-laws are steadfast in their intentions to age in their home as long as possible, and we are helping them make modifications to their house to do so. They will need eyes on them once a day, between visiting nurse and home aide schedules. He will need support with administering IV med cartridges, wound care and personal care. They will likely need support with food some days (warming meals, etc.) About the care needs: Have an appreciation and understanding for their somewhat idiosyncratic old-fashioned living choices--small cabin in rural town, no dishwasher, no TV, heated with wood until illness. They enjoy conversation, reading, MIL does needlework, FIL is a builder/tinkerer and enjoys engineering problems as his "hobby." Both are quite computer literate for their ages. Services needed include: transportation, meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, feeding, bathing / dressing, and mobility assistance.
