About who needs care: My dad is 81 years old. He is on a walker on a good day. But has recently been in the hospital and then in nursing home rehab trying to get stronger so he can go home. He was admitted with pneumonia and we have had a difficult time getting him strong enough to come back home. He does not have good insurance and so it is likely that they will send him home before he is strong enough to be independent on his walker. We are looking for someone who might come into the home for a few hours a day and help with him getting to ambulate safely, practicing walking and getting stronger. We would also want someone to be willing to help him safely get his shower, maybe 3 days a week. The exercise portion of this plan might need to happen 5 days a week. My mother lives with him, but she is not stable on her feet enough to be the one that safely helps him walk with his walker and get stronger. They live in a bi-level home. There are three steps between one level of the home and the next level. We are trying to get him strong enough to safely navigate those three steps. But I am concerned that insurance will send him home before he can safely do that. my mom has a lot of responsibilities because they have a lot of yard to take care of and she is managing all of the errands. So sometimes the caregiver would be there for their two to four hour shift and Mom would be gone part of that time taking care of other things. They live in a ranch style home near the airport in Mayfield Kentucky. The caregiver would be required to safely help my dad walk, do some bathing and toileting tasks, and possibly light housekeeping to assist my mother. About the care needs: A positive and cheerful personality would be important in this environment. We want to keep my dad motivated and we want my mom to look forward to the caregiver coming into her home. As far as specialized skills go, we need a caregiver that is strong enough to safely assist my dad if he were to lose his balance on his walker. He is approximately 5 ft 11, 200 lb. He had a hip surgery two years ago and has never been fully strong in that extremity since then. We are trying to keep him moving to keep muscle strength or he does not end up in a wheelchair, but someone dependable needs to be near him to assist in a daily walking and strengthening session. Services needed include: feeding, bathing / dressing, and mobility assistance.
