About who needs care: My mother was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimers this past December. She lives with my step-dad, who works full time. I do my best to help a could days a week, but he is getting very overwhelmed. She is not so progressed that she needs 24 hour care. She still has pretty good long-term memory, recognizes people, etc. She just needs help with things that require multiple steps. Her short-term memory isn't the best. She has always loved to paint, bake/cook, spend time outdoors, but she struggles with a lot those things now on her own. She is most active from about 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 pm, then she gets to be pretty tired. She also has type 2 diabetes, and a big struggle of ours is to get her to eat. About the care needs: My mom can be a bit... hard headed and quick to being upset if she feels like someone is accusing her of being wrong. However, when she is in a good mood things are pretty easy going with her. Someone who is used to navigating people with dementia will definitely be needed. Services needed include: transportation, meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, and companionship.
