About who needs care: My mom is 74 and has ALS. She is a quadriplegic. My dad, sister and I are her primary caregivers, however I just had major surgery and we are in need of a caregiver short term (approximately a month to a month and a half) while I'm going through recovery. The primary job we' need from a caregiver during the time frame (9am-1pm) is to assisting my dad by giving a boost to her from behind while getting her on and off the commode, holding her while she's on the commode (my sister will also be assisting with holding her, but that is a 2 person job, and the move from the commode to back in her bed is a 3 person job). She will also need assistance with feeding (You will need to feed her with a spoon while she's in bed, she is bedridden), and sit with her in case she needs anything simple (changing the channel on TV, etc.) Ideally, light housework (collecting the living room garbage and vacuuming) would be highly appreciated as well, however the major tasks are (listed above) in regard to her. You will not be left alone with her, my dad works part time from home, working in the same room as my mom's hospital bed, and my sister (who has Asperger's, and is very quiet, but high functioning) will also be there to help. About the care needs: An ideal caregiver would be a CNA, and/or someone who has experience with assisted mobility. If you have knowledge/understanding of ALS or experience working with ALS patients, that is preferred as well. Services needed include: feeding, bathing / dressing, and mobility assistance.
