About who needs care: My mother had a stroke in October 2024. She has recovered and currently lives independently in a retirement community condo. Recently, she suffered a fractured vertebra and bruised rib and is on medication to control the pain. She needs help with ADL tasks such as showering and dressing on a (hopefully) temporary basis. She may also need transportation assistance at times. We are looking into options for someone to check in on her often, but it may not need to be every day. My mother was a nurse for almost 50 years and a natural caregiver herself. She is knowledgeable about medicine, though she often claims she doesn't know much, and her mind is still very sharp. After her stroke, she gained 95% of her strength and speech back by sheer determination, but she still gets frustrated that it's not 100%. She loves to play bridge (in person and/or on the computer) and enjoys reading and doing puzzles in the newspaper. About the care needs: The caregiver should be helpful and encouraging but not pushy. Services needed include: transportation, meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, feeding, and bathing / dressing.
