About who needs care: My mother recently had surgery to repair a serious hiatal hernia. She does have breathing and cardiac issues. For the next 6 to 8 weeks, she is on a liquid only diet. She is unable to lift anything or drive. Even prior to the surgery, she was having difficulty doing household chores. She was able to cook for herself and my dad, but unable to clean up after. My dad helps a bit, but not enough. My mother is an artist. She loves to paint in both watercolor and oils. She also knits. Likewise, she likes to read and play video games on her i-pad. She mainly needs help with daily household chores, but may also need more personal care assist while recovering from her surgery. About the care needs: Someone who listens well and is sensitive to my mother's embarrassment of needing help. Someone who will respect my mother's autonomy, treat her with dignity and honor her boundaries. Basically, someone who will include my mother in the caregiving process and be present with her.
