About who needs care: My brother has post-polio syndrome. He uses a wheelchair but also can use a cane while in the house. At this time, he gets around on his own and is still driving. He has had a stroke in the past that left him with aphasia and struggles finding words sometimes. His wife passed away about 6 months ago and he has no family in Hawaii. I live in Ky and his brother lives in Wisconsin. He owns his home and has an elevator list which puts most of this living, except laundry, on one floor. He has hired someone to come in a couple times a week for a few hours and we are trying to expand that care. He, his family and his friends all believe he needs more. We are finding no resources in Hilo. About the care needs: Someone who is patient as he speaks (searched for words, someone who won't take things personally if he gets frustrated with communication, someone who will go for walks with him (when I was there for a couple weeks a few months ago we went out every day), someone that can help organize his medications. He is a former professor of philosophy at the university of Hawaii. He enjoys conversation but not a lot of small talk. Services needed include: meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, companionship, feeding, and bathing / dressing.
