About who needs care: My mom was diagnosed with Bulbar Onset ALS about 1 year ago. Because of her diagnosis, she lost her ability to speak verbally and communicates by typing on a phone or iPad. She uses a feeding tube for all meals, hydration, and medication, but she is independent with using her feeding tube and medications. She is currently able to walk and use her hands functionally, but she is experiencing weakness in her neck muscles. At this time, we decided it is best for her to no longer be driving. We are looking for a companion/caregiver that is able to transport her to her doctor's appointments or other appointments. She uses a rollator sometimes, so being able to carry a rollator or equipment (no more than 5-10 lbs) in and out of the car. She loves music and shows, she is the kindest person I know, and loves to laugh. We just need a little extra help and companionship :) About the care needs: We would like our ideal caregiver to have some background knowledge in ALS or caring for adults with specialized needs. Someone that is a safe driver and comfortable with using their own car for transportation. A caregiver with a great attitude and upbeat personality would be ideal. Additionally, someone that is comfortable around basic medical equipment (suction machine, etc.) but does not need to operate equipment. Services needed include: transportation, and companionship.
