About who needs care: Sadie is a small, 89 yo woman with dementia on hospice, living in her home with her husband, and is in a wheelchair. She is fluent in Spanish and English. She is fairly quiet most of the time but does respond to simple yes or no questions or tell you her preference between two known options. She transfers very slowly and cautiously with a gait belt and her walker. She is strong but incredibly wary when standing. She needs a good amount of assistance during eating with either preparing the fork with a bite or being fed entirely, depending on the day and what food is served. She wears full top and bottom dentures when waking, and taken out at night. She is hard of hearing; though slow, enunciation, with eye contact is incredibly helpful. Her husband, Roy(88 yo), is very independent and makes his own food. He is even harder of hearing than she is, so talk loudly and slowly, first getting his attention. She is on hospice so encouraging her to eat, take meds, drink, stay up, or go down, is welcome, but if she refuses, that's okay. This is a one time need but if you work well with her and would like, we can discus a part time position. WHAT THE JOB ENTAILS: I am her granddaughter and medical POA. I will be available for a training prior to the shift that is paid and show you around. You will be relieved by my uncle, her son at the end of the shift. She will require dinner(which will be prepped so only heating necessary), her night time medicine at or after 6 p.m. that she takes very well, toileting(she is continent), bed routine, and in bed. She may call out once after being put down but for the most part, she will sleep soundly for the rest of the shift. Please feel free to ask any questions before or after accepting the job. About the care needs: Someone with a lot of patience. She does things repetitively, she is used to being catered to, and does most things very slowly. She sometimes has clear speech, sometimes not, and may say sentences that don't make sense. Just go with it and continue in HER reality. Other than a comfortability with dementia, there are no special skills needed; just basic toilet and transfer knowledge. She was a painter and seamstress. Services needed include: companionship, feeding, bathing / dressing, and mobility assistance.
